For Immediate Release:

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas (June 3, 2025)—NewBraunfels ER & Hospital, a state-of-the-art Nutex Health, Inc. facility, is proud to announce its partnership with Athra, a leading behavioral health provider, to integrate psychiatric and substance use services directly into its emergency and inpatient care settings.

This collaboration brings comprehensive, real-time psychiatric support to the New Braunfels community—offering a critical solution for individuals experiencing mental health crises, withdrawal symptoms, or medication-related complications. Patients will now have access to behavioral health evaluations, medication management, and care planning on-site, without the delays or disruption of being transferred elsewhere.

“We serve a diverse population—from families in crisis to older adults with complex needs—and having psychiatric support immediately available is a game-changer,” said Scott Knepper, MD, Chief Medical Officer at New Braunfels ER & Hospital. “Our collaboration with Athra ensures we’re delivering care that’s not only fast but holistic.”

This integration is designed to support both the patient and the referring professional. Through close coordination with area physicians, therapists, psychiatric hospitals, and community organizations, the new model will also serve as a stabilizing resource for schools, addiction programs, and first responders.

“This isn’t just a behavioral health add-on—it’s a true partnership that strengthens our entire care model,” added Stephanie Garcia, Chief Nursing Officer at New Braunfels ER & Hospital. “It allows us to meet patients where they are, physically and emotionally.”

Athra’s team includes psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, and licensed mental health providers offering access to psychiatric consultations. Their flexible care model aligns with the operational flow of micro-hospitals, like New Braunfels ER & Hospital, supporting both acute and long-term psychiatric needs.

“Our goal is to remove barriers and restore dignity to mental health care,” said Jason Miller, DO, Chief Clinical Officer of Athra. “We’re proud to be part of the New Braunfels solution—where mental, emotional, and physical care come together under one roof.”

The rollout in New Braunfels marks a significant step forward in Nutex Health’s broader strategy to integrate behavioral healthcare and substance use programs across several hospitals in its network of micro-hospitals nationwide.

“We are excited to lead the way in Texas by offering this level of behavioral health access to our community,” said Tessa Owens, Director of Business Development at New Braunfels ER & Hospital. “It reflects our mission to deliver complete, compassionate care and stay ahead of the evolving needs of our patients.”
